Aged Tawny Port is a blend of the best Port wines from several vintages that are then aged in barrels, generally for at least 10 years. With often only half the alcohol content of vodka or gin, you’ll find a growing number of bar lists featuring port in all sorts of ways you had probably never imagined. Made by the Symington Family Estate – a well-known house in Portugal’s Douro Valley – this is a very well-priced special reserve. Port wine is made in several styles and all are fortified, meaning the wine is sweet and the alcohol is about 20%. The wine is sweet, rich, smooth and warming with a very long finish. Late-bottle vintage (LBV) ports, on the other hand, while still IDVP certified, can be declared in any year, are aged for 4 to 6 years before bottling, and are meant to be consumed upon release.

White Port – Briefly aged before bottling, they are meant to be drunk young and range from crisp dry wines, best served with tonic, ice and lemon, to sweeter versions, which go well with puddings. Warre’s Optima 10 Year Old Tawny Port — translucent amber in the glass with generous aromas of brown sugar and dried figs. Rather than being crushed mechanically, Port grapes have traditionally been crushed under foot in stone troughs called lagares by groups of individuals linked arm-in-arm. Vintage Ports need a long time to age. Like all wine, styles dictate price, with entry level ruby ports being the least expensive, through to more premium vintage ports. What might be an excellent addition to this might be American port style wines. Late bottled vintage (LBV) – A ruby port from a good year, as the name suggests, it spends longer in the barrel so is bottled later than a true vintage.

For a bottle to be classified as a vintage, the grapes used must come from a single exceptional year and be certified by Portugal’s Port and Douro Wines Institute (IDVP). Traditionally made with foot-trodden grapes in Noval’s old granite lagares in the very hot summer of 2003, this port is dense, rich and velvety, with leather, liquorish and damsons. As a result reserve Port retains its dark ruby color and fruit flavors.
