I would love to know what Will would have thought about the Penrose idea of Conformal Cyclic Cosmology? Picked this off the 'in' shelf at the library. She said I would be contacted after the problem was looked at by someone higher up the food chain but this never happened so it still does not work properly. I like to refresh myself on my intuitive understanding of physics every once in a while since I won't ever admit to understanding more than 30%-40% of the math. And if I could b. Ive been meaning to read this for awhile. The concept of uncertainty in context of Penrose's work and this book still haunts and amazes me.
Unfortunately, the evidence to date is far from compelling. But personally, I enjoyed the maths and it was nice to finally understand why Hawking was conjecturing about why we don't remember the future in "A Brief History of Time"! Cycles of Time is a technical bomb, replete with unsupported and unfalsifiable, but curious ideas.
. The math is way in another universe from my limited calculus background. I had to take several breaks from the book to try and digest what I had understood from the text, often returning to it only to discover that what I thought he was trying to say was almost the com. As the boundaries of any Universe approach infinity space-time is re-. But like all steep slopes, sometimes you take a moment from your struggles and look up, and in front of you is an utterly gorgeous view.” —The Boston Globe “Truly extraordinary. the fundamental electron particle, which shows no sign of this). Four Stars: I gave it this because I still have faith that Penrose offers a way out of the singularity of the Big Bang. Haven Lost The Dragon's Brood Cycle Book 1 by Josh de Lioncourt Genre: Epic Fantasy Legends never die … Sixteen-year-old Emily Haven, heroine of the girls’ hockey team at Lindsey High, has spent her young life keeping two secrets: her rapidly deteriorating home life and the seemingly supernatural power that makes her a star on… My maths is not strong enough, nor is my brain, to follow all the reasoning. This is a really difficult book to read without some real physics education, in spite of it advertising as a popular science book.
It's not for the faint-hearted though - the mathematics in this book are essential to make sense of it, and I suspect they will be hard going for anyone without exposure beyond A-level. From Nobel prize-winner Roger Penrose, this groundbreaking book is for anyone "who is interested in the world, how it works, and how it got here" (New York Journal of Books). I also consider myself above the base level of scientific literacy for a layman but definitely still an outsider. The extension is not supposed to have any physical meaning!

I got lost three equations in. Intellectually thrilling and widely accessible, Cycles of Time is a welcome new contribution to our understanding of the universe from one of our greatest mathematicians and thinkers. Unfortunately, he is not brilliant at communicating his unorthodox ideas.
. October 11th 2010 If you've never read 'Cycle' but instead seen the film 'Silver Bullet', which is based on this novelette, you will find a lot of differences. Penrose writes well, even for this technical of a book, and even though I didn't understand any of the equations or half the explanation of what the CCC is, I read through it fairly easily and with enjoyment. Enter your mobile number or email address below and we'll send you a link to download the free Kindle App. I am not stupid. But he is constitutionally incapable of describing things adequately for laypeople. I took a tea break walked in a circle, picked back up the book and continued to stare at it trying to glean somehow the information that I obviously was not meant to be clever enough to follow.
I just can't make any comment on the checking out of these ideas at this time in my life. [which] must be taken seriously.” —The Scotsman “As uncondescending in style .
I love learning about cosmology and physics! This fascinating book will surely become a classic in the history of cosmology.” —Choice “Of interest to anyone who is interested in the world, how it works, and how it got here. Makes sense to me, the universe is (probably) an infinite perpetual motion machine and the math works according to Penrose.
13 months. A treatise on information theory or refer to the founding of information theory - Claude Shannon's "A Mathematical Theory of Communication". Not sure but it could be. There were times when I had to go over passages more than once, but it's worth sticking with it.
I have a Kindle HDX 7" and the immersion feature does not work as described. This shopping feature will continue to load items when the Enter key is pressed. Unable to add item to List. Excellent review of Penrose's new work in cosmology, suitable for the serious layperson and scholar alike.
Every time I read Penrose, I love the fact that he is not afraid to make his popular science books a little bit technical. To before the Big Bang? . While it's entertaining in the most part and even funny in places, in other places, it's very dense, and while Penrose tries to keep the book as close to layman's terms as he can, there are parts which require a pretty good grasp of advanced mathematics. An excellent read and a very big idea indeed. But, even if it isn't correct, Penrose is asking such interesting questions that the book is absolutely worth reading. Because that is what I love - I might not understand very much but each time I read a book like this I do understand a little more. His technical literature is written brilliantly as well.
But getting a hold of the math changes the game. letters that I can't pronounce and that when he uses initials to signify a particular processs, like OR, that he reminds his reader more often what the mean i.e.Objective Reduction. But even so, this one was a real slog for me.
. I had to take several breaks from the book to try and digest what I had understood from the text, often returning to it only to discover that what I thought he was trying to say was almost the complete opposite of what he was saying. And if I could barely make sense of much of it, I can only imagine how hard it would be for someone who just does popular science usually. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. He is renowned for his work in mathematical physics, in particular his contributions to general relativity and cosmology. There are many other reviews out there, so I'll just add this snippet. It gets a bit confusing trying to follow such a ling line of reasoning without that sort of reminder every so often. Please add cover & correct metadata for Cycles of Time audiobook, The 40 Most Popular Horror Novels of the Last 5 Years. The extension is not supposed to have any physical meaning! The 13-digit and 10-digit formats both work. It seems an ingenious way of sidestepping the Big Bang singularity by redefining time and space with a geometrical sleight of hand, and if done carefully real spacetime becomes singularity and vice versa.
Helps if one has read other earlier books on the same topic but he does provide some background of what came before. The concept of uncertainty in context of Penrose's work and this book still haunts and amazes me. In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading. I really tried, and I kept trying because I think the idea is flawless. He will respect your intellect if you are looking for something deeper than a "for dummies" type discussion, even if you don't have a university education in science. Fantastic alternate explanation of the universe's origin that your friends will not know. "The entire fabric of life on earth requires the maintaining of a profound and subtle organization, which undoubtedly involves entropy being kept at a low level." Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 11, 2013. As the boundaries of any Universe approach infinity space-time is re-scaled by a factor K as matter disappears (S=KT). Here are just three examples: Is it convincing?
I read this book cover to cover, and then the appendix and then tried again. I can see from the date stamps that loads of people have been reading this.... Technically it lost me very soon. Will Rogers once said that "anything you can't spell will never work." . Since immersion won't work, it is better to just get the text version.
A challenging book for the average person because of all the math and equations strewn throughout the book.
Please try again. Please try again. . This book, like all Penrose, is not for wimps but at least this time he puts the Riemann geometry and manifold calculus in the appendix. Conformal Cyclic Comsmology has become a recent fascination of mine and the videos and expaliners I have seen all make a convincing case for it-at least as a thought experiment if nothing else. I can honestly admit that I could not understand nor have any basis for figuring out the vast majority of this book. Por el camino, nos explica muchos otros ingredientes básicos de esta idea y comenta varios modelos cosmológicos, tanto ortodoxos como heterodoxos, así como el papel fundamental y ubicuo de la radiación cósmica de microondas. I read this book cover to cover, and then the appendix and then tried again. To avoid thinking about the Start I naively do a related trick by using logarithmic time so there never is one! Join The Wheel of Time in its revolution and read the series in time for the final book. I will re-read it soon because of some parts I didn't understand very well. Interesting, but ultimately deeply depressing, if he's right - and I don't believe he is - but then who am I to disagree? Basically, Penrose posits that in the far future all particles will lose their mass. I'm not going to lie, I really struggled to get through this book. AUDIO: utterly impossible to follow - KINDLE: graphically crippled, Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2015. I like that Penrose thinks persistently outside the box, but this “popular science” book definitely needed to be written by a scientist with more experience at communication. Maybe next time.
