South Trailhead: From Havens WMA, return to the intersection of SR 311 and SR 419. Me and my 14 yr old son did the out and back up to the top of Three Ridges ate lunch on Hanging rock. This trail is quick and easy to follow with an astonishingly beautiful overlook. There is a slight decline going down to the overlook, but nothing crazy. This was a nice easy trail with a view that is well worth the distance (and more). You definitely get a bird’s eye view up here! Unfortunately the overlook is overgrown as well. There is a nice flat rock to take in the views and enjoy a snack once you reach the turn around point, which is nice. Went with teenage sons and dog and managed it well. Trail was easy to follow and opens up to some amazing views. Several interpretive signs and exhibits along the way explain the significance of the trail and educate pedestrians about the area's Civil War history, including the Battle of Hanging Rock. moderate is right for this one. It has a pretty steady incline the majority of the way up but the view from Hanging rock is definitely worth it.

She loves exploring new places, and she loves heading back home again when she's done. But if you have a couple free hours the drive in and out is nice. Combine this outing with a meal at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant in Paint Bank, VA and you will have a delightful day trip. What a great little hike to an outstanding overlook that I'd argue is an even better view than McAfee Knob. I continued on to the Three Ridges summit about 1-1.5 miles past Hanging Rock and turned around - there's another nice overlook there but it's not as nice as Hanging Rock, so if you're just in it for the best views I'd recommend turning back at Hanging Rock. The drive in requires some care; there are 3 miles of gravel leading to the trailhead that can get washed out, but you can still manage in a small car if you drive slowly & with care. I saw signs of bear activity but not the actual thing.
