Hanging Rock is a 11.7 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Roseland, Virginia that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. This trail was almost empty when I hiked it on a Monday. Potts Mountain Road can be a bumpy ride from time to time but it's the out of the way feel that keeps the crowds way down! The parking area is small, but there is enough room for 4-5 cars. Let the world see your experience through your eyes. Great hike for those with little kids, way overgrown on the way to the overlook though. What a view! I did counter-clockwise like others recommended, though I don’t think it matters much.

South Trailhead: From Havens WMA, return to the intersection of SR 311 and SR 419. Me and my 14 yr old son did the out and back up to the top of Three Ridges ate lunch on Hanging rock. This trail is quick and easy to follow with an astonishingly beautiful overlook. There is a slight decline going down to the overlook, but nothing crazy. This was a nice easy trail with a view that is well worth the distance (and more). You definitely get a bird’s eye view up here! Unfortunately the overlook is overgrown as well. There is a nice flat rock to take in the views and enjoy a snack once you reach the turn around point, which is nice. Went with teenage sons and dog and managed it well. Trail was easy to follow and opens up to some amazing views. Several interpretive signs and exhibits along the way explain the significance of the trail and educate pedestrians about the area's Civil War history, including the Battle of Hanging Rock. moderate is right for this one. It has a pretty steady incline the majority of the way up but the view from Hanging rock is definitely worth it.
She loves exploring new places, and she loves heading back home again when she's done. But if you have a couple free hours the drive in and out is nice. Before heading out, first check with individual sites on the Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail to find out whether they are still open to the public.

Hanging Rock Trail is a hidden gem in southern Virginia, and those who venture there are rewarded with an incredible mountain overlook. To reach the trailhead if you are traveling north on Route 311 from New Castle, turn right on Potts Mountain Road at the top of Potts Mountain (if you reach the fish hatchery, you’ve gone too far) and go three miles to the well-marked trailhead parking lot on the left. Observed bear scat but no bear. Want to see one of the best views in the whole state, but don’t want to have to work very hard to get there? Plus, it's nice to have the view all to yourself.

It was challenging at times and absolutely worth it. But the view is 100% worth it definitely would hike again. My visit, my first, was for the broad-wing hawk migration, with the tiny hawks on the move from Canada and New. Easy walk to the overlook. We went on a Friday evening and had the trail & overlook to ourselves. there is a well marked little parking lot. Had no trouble finding a campsite on our return and overall lovely time! Perhaps it is most popular as a recreational walking/jogging trail, but there is much nature to be explored by the patient naturalist. The trail itself isn't particularly interesting, but the payoff is huge.

Eastern phoebe, a perching tail-pumper, sallies from tree to tree, taking its prey in flight. Ebony jewelwing, a woodland damselfly, flits about the understory, but stays within its territory unlike fluttering woodland butterflies such as common wood-nymph, satyrs, and azures. But this would be a great place to pack a snack or lunch and enjoy. Challenging trail with cool gnarly trees and an impressive view. The Little Stony National Recreation Trail is a 3.0-mile trail with an upper trailhead at Falls of Little Stony Creek, and a lower trailhead at Hanging Rock Picnic Area. You'll know you're getting close when you see No Trespassing and entry to a driveway on the right. Highly recommend for a quick trip if in the area. Great trail. As long as you're used to following a trail, you shouldn't have any difficulty sticking to the trail- and the yellow markers are pretty frequent along the path. Parking is limited at the Hanging Rock Battlefiled Trail monument. If you are ever in southwest Virginia or southeastern West Virginia, you should give this place a visit. Combine this outing with a meal at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant in Paint Bank, VA and you will have a delightful day trip. What a great little hike to an outstanding overlook that I'd argue is an even better view than McAfee Knob. I continued on to the Three Ridges summit about 1-1.5 miles past Hanging Rock and turned around - there's another nice overlook there but it's not as nice as Hanging Rock, so if you're just in it for the best views I'd recommend turning back at Hanging Rock. Terrific out of the way light and easy leg stretcher with a terrific overlook for a payoff. The drive in requires some care; there are 3 miles of gravel leading to the trailhead that can get washed out, but you can still manage in a small car if you drive slowly & with care. I saw signs of bear activity but not the actual thing.

But the weather: It was foggy, moist and windy and the old Forest Service fire-watch station is not insulated. Green heron wade in the creeks, hunting for a meal, while Louisiana waterthrush, bobbing its tail as it hops along the creek bottom bedrock, forages more actively.
This hike is part of the Three Ridges backpacking/camping trail and follows along the AT to a viewpoint. Passed a fair number of people while on the trail, most making their way past Hanging Rock to the next summit.
Be advised that some sites, even if still open, may have certain public facilities closed during this time.
Plenty of campsites in addition the two AT shelters. Beautiful view at the end.

This hike met my expectations - there were a few pretty overlooks but this loop doesn’t have that “you’ve arrived” moment a lot of other mountaintops have. Little cloudy when we went, but still cool views as the clouds rolled over. Overgrowth: As another reviewer said, this trail definitely has some significant overgrowth. There's one or two older fallen trees, and a more recent one near the trail head. Then head north up Route 311 from Roanoke through New Castle to the top of Potts Mountain for an overlook that’s hard to beat.
