Anyway one who puts this movie down is truly living in a bubble. But watching this, I appreciated the wonderful cinematography and the--ahem--interesting music, but it evoked no emotions inside me, and I felt I hadn't learned anything from it except the things we see in those "You, too, can sponsor a child" television ads. Just think of the time envoled in this shoot, the locations, the stunning cinematograghy. Just a bunch of footage of third-worlders with "baskets on their heads" as another reviewer said. Having just watched Powaqqatsi -- well, it is good, but it isn't the same. The film spans the globe, from a massive gold mine in Brazil, to small villages in Africa, to a Nepalese temple, and is accompanied by a frantic score from minimalist composer Philip Glass. Subsequent reports of one's experience then tend to become watered down because one has to use words to describe it. by Philip Glass.

While the first had effects that might be likened to video-game razzle-dazzle, and was entertaining in its own right, Powaqqatsi is a celebration of humanity and does not repeat the earlier images.
Cinemark Of course nothing can be done about resolution of source material but as usual Criterion sets the bar for digital restoration and this is about the best you'll see these films. Please reference “Error Code 2121” when contacting customer service. A bit pricey but you get a lot of value. So, essentially, it is 95 or so minutes of people either working, or walking around. There are images and transitions in this film that will stay with me forever. This is a superb second film of a once planned trilogy that began with Koyaanisqatsi. Powaqqatsi definitely is a disappointment as a follow up of Koyaanisqatsi.
The music is tribal and danceable at some parts. Elements of the film have been copied incessantly since. It is different because it lacks Ron Fricke's cinematography. Very powerful visuals. It was a totally new cinema experience and the music and images were perfectly combined to give a very powerful message. Reggio's work may be mesmerizing and technically engrossing, but it's also narrowly self-righteous. It appears some producer gathered up leftover material from Koyaanisqatsi, hurriedly threw it together, placed everything in slow motion and got some pop entertainer under the pseudonym of Philip Glass to hurriedly throw together some banal background music, which is incessantly repeated. This is an absolute mess. With the filming of the trilogy taking over 20 years to complete, the advances in the music, technology and filming makes me suggest that you start from the beginning to watch how things have changed in that time. Some of these shots are of surpassing beauty, especially the smiling faces of a row of children. I couldn't - and still can't - believe that these commercial-sounding New Age type drones, which could easily have been composed in one afternoon by any 14-year-old on a Casio calculator, were from the same composer who so brilliantly composed the emotional and perfectly-synchronized music for Koyaanisqatsi. It's a disappointing moment when you realise this is all you're going to be watching: people working and people walking around.
I recently revisited Koyaanisqatsi and found it to be just as magnificent and hypnotic as I had remembered. You see a miner ascending a ladder in slow-motion, carrying a bag of mud on shoulders, accompanied by a heavy, pounding music. Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. The contrasts between abject poverty and vast, impersonal mechanical processes, such as a freight train. 40 customer ratings. When I watched them for the first time it was back to back, and I'm sorry to conclude that the naïve, ethnic romanticism of Powaqqatsi is unfit to bear such close commercial relation to the masterpiece, Koyaanisqatsi. All in all, a big waste of time! Plus mixed with Philip Glass's composed music - it is relaxing and mild.
