When a founder of the field of quantum computing writes a book, the world pays attention. The book communicates some very important ideas, many of which I agree with and some not. I found two of Deutsch's chapters not clear enough to understand--the chapter on the mathematics of infinity and the chapter on the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics. I find it hard to conceive of the depth of preparation that must have gone into preparing the amazing synthesis that is provided by Deutsch in this light hearted, weightily significant masterpiece.
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book.
A must read book that will change the way you think forever.
His reconciling of quantum mechanics with Einstein’s theory of relativity changes, well, everything. I also like the emphasis on knowledge, and that if the laws of physics does not prohibit it, then with the necessary knowledge any problem is solvable. Sam Harris, Narrated by: I think he managed to nudge my understanding of quantum theory forward a bit, and for that I'm grateful. However, his early chapters e.g. What does Walter Dixon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
While David Deutsch has unique and important things to say, he is something of a dry writer.
I like his observation that good science needs to be 'explanatory' and how creativity has the capacity to create new 'explanations'.
Ok, I m no philosopher, but I see that the author makes assumptions about humans and human society which just don't hold up. Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe", a region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. In this important new book, David Deutsch, an award-winning pioneer in the field of quantum computation, argues that explanations have a fundamental place in the universe.
In this mind-blowing New York Times bestseller, an award-winning physicist journeys through history to assess how humans form and revise explanations for everything — from science and politics to art and morality — and how they impact progress. I came to this book after listening to D. in conversation with another great communicator, Sam Harris. This just comes across as sour grapes. There were many good things in this book, and on balance I'm glad I finished it. By:
These questions seem unconnected, yet Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir show that they are all are examples of a mindset produced by scarcity. This is a very important book. In Never Home Alone, biologist Rob Dunn introduces us to the nearly 200,000 species living with us in our own homes, from the Egyptian meal moths in our cupboards and camel crickets in our basements to the lactobacillus lounging on our kitchen counters.
Sapolsky's storytelling concept is delightful, but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: He starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs and then hops back in time from there in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy.
I suspect most listeners will feel the same way.
Would you listen to The Beginning of Infinity again? It was fantastic to listen to so many ground-breaking ideas that I, already an scientifically-minded atheist, had never conceived before.
His theory of explanations is interesting and well expressed.
It's complex. Really. Stephen Fry, Narrated by: He attacks the topics of quantum theory and the multiverse in a way that I found to be quite thought-provoking, and any book that provokes thought is, in my opinion, worth reading (or listening to). An essential read for all intelligent agents. Why do successful people get things done at the last minute?
But any concept which can't be expressed in the number of particles in a brain can't be understood by it, so a limit obviously exists. I think he managed to nudge my understanding of quantum theory forward a bit, and for that I'm grateful. Rob Shapiro, How Calculus Reveals the Secrets of the Universe, Written by:
I had high hopes, as Deutsch's work came recommended by a thoughtful physicist friend I respect, but for the first several chapters I was turned off by the tone of the writing.
Feodor Chin. Deutsch tackles giants (Dawkins, Hofstadter and Dennet and many many more) without perceptible fear of authority - addressing the magic of their insights and the folly of their oversights with candid and calculated precision. The other chapters are philosophy of science, and are quite understandable. While I think that Deutsch has a great grasp of many aspects of how science works--he's both a philosopher and a noted physicist--he doesn't have as much understanding of how human beings work. I find it hard to conceive of the depth of preparation that must have gone into preparing the amazing synthesis that is provided by Deutsch in this light hearted, weightily significant masterpiece.
For example: Mostly either commonplace or grossly implausible views, Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2019.
When LSD was first discovered in the 1940s, it seemed to researchers, scientists and doctors as if the world might be on the cusp of psychological revolution. I wish more people believed as the author does. Feinman illuminates each discussion with many intriguing, outrageous, and infamous cases.
The more he learns, the more he comes to realize that ball lightning is just the tip of a new frontier in particle physics.
His thesis, based on a synthesis of Popper, Dawkins and Hilbert, as well as his own interpretation of the Many Worlds theory of QM, is that through creativity, and the continuous search for "good explanation", we are able to shape our environment in ways no other force of nature is capable, and the reach of that ability is infinite. At times his arguments are really hard to follow, and I suspected he may be slipping in some slightly dubious logic. I think it's his pet theory or something.
Science - Physics. I got the impression his publisher had told him to put in concepts X, Y and Z liberally to appeal to a particular book-purchasing audience. Having persuaded us of the power and reach of "good explanations", he betrays these very values.

a great book for a starving mind. While he is limited in his worldview and not the most engaging in his writing style, he has a lot to say to us.
Deutsch is a remarkably clear and articulate thinker. Jerry A. Coyne, Narrated by:
He seems to assume that we can all know about them in this stereotypical way without ever taking a closer look, as an anthropologist or a more spiritual person might. As a note, he similarly dismisses any type of spiritual experience, but with no documentation as to why we should. provided hopeless ponder. What more could you ask from a single book? From Boltzmann to quantum theory, from Einstein to loop quantum gravity, our understanding of time has been undergoing radical transformations. That would have been fine, but some interesting topics were covered in a rather cursory way.
Sean Carroll, theoretical physicist and one of this world’s most celebrated writers on science, rewrites the history of 20th-century physics.
Seth MacFarlane,
Marcus Aurelius,
The Great Courses, Narrated by: Deutsch's conclusion that in the past creativity was used to suppress innovation is bizarre. That's fine, but it's covered better elsewhere and it isn't why I bought this book.
And while I personally have no doubt that the multiverse interpretation is one of rather good explanations of quantum mechanics foundations, I would like to label David Deutsch as a "corrupter of youth" for his attempts in subverting the golden standards of the scientific discourse.
For too long, scientists have focused on the dark side of our biological heritage: our capacity for aggression, cruelty, prejudice, and self-interest.
I’m seduced by the upbeat, the optimistic take on our universe, that runs like a red threat through the book. Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, He attacks the topics of quantum theory and the multiverse in a way that I found to be quite thought-provoking, and any book that provokes thought is, in my opinion, worth reading (or listening to).
