5th lvl spells are very effective, it's not likely to be as hard even as getting your initial Kensai XP was for heaven's sake.Most people nab what, ~7m XP per party member on an entire playthrough without grinding?

Tell us something we DON'T know next time. But a level 9 Kensai, better than a level 9 Berserker, "end of discussion?" The Fighter / Mage is a very flexible and effective conjoinment of classes. If you specialize in longswords and flails without dual wielding, you won't be able to competently dual wield anything which will leave you with a useless second melee proficiency. Also something to think about is that a lot of the tougher NPC enemies use plate mail or full plate mail which slashing weapons get a -3 and -4 penalty to hit against. In vanilla SoA, without Watchers Keep, it wasn't hard to hit the cap, and that was why the lvl 13 Kensai Mage dual was 'the most powerful', as no ToB existed.
I'm confused on this one. Debatable. Regardless, as I said, I am willing to agree 'as a matter of personal taste' one might easily prefer an earlier dual, but doing it with a Kensai we both would have to agree is just plain dumb. I might look into the Inquisitor (I also read that it was good but that it debuffs your whole party at the same time so that's part of what made me hesitate). If you are going to be doing whirlwind attacks, you might want to have a 2 handed weapon in there (2H sword, halberd, spear and staff are all viable with top-end TOB weapons for the end game).
I think it could still be doable with a Monk though. However using two weapons would also logically increase my dps. This leaves me to assume that even though 5% crit chance is good, that having extra attack on -4 (-2 if 3 points) penalty and no penalty on Main hand (which ends up giving same THAC0 for backstabs as single weapon proficiency). Katanas get an honourable mention, due to Celestial Fury, which is really the best weapon for a decent stretch in SoA, but it is outclassed later.Katanas, especially, are hurt by CF only being +3.

Assuming you are a Vanilla fighter, just dual at 9th, probably not worth the trouble of getting the HUGE XP for nothing but 1/2 attack.

Debatable. It's an RPG. Easy! I read that they get very high damage and THAC0 but I just don't see how it's that big of a deal if you Dual Class him. I did an insane solo poverty run of ToB with a Wild Mage once using the Nahal's Reckless Dweomer trick (cast via hotkey even if not memorized) for infinite spells, and PFMW and SI: Everything were extremely helpful.Although even then, Melissan was difficult.
