I've never played it and have barely played games like it. Unfortunately i'm not really having much fun with it and I was planning on skipping to the (apparently much superior) Baldur's Gate 2. It goes through levels 1-10. You also have Githyanki and Illithids which are going to play big roles in the story. How it differs from it's Baldur's Gate is that Icewind Dale focuses more on combat.

The good news for any fans of Dungeons and Dragons video games is that Baldur's Gate 3 is now on the way.
If you do play BG1, I recommend doing some form of BG2 mod, like Baldur's Gate Trilogy. I played about half of BG1 in its normal form, then restarted with the BGT mod and it was far more enjoyable. I was filtered by the fact that it was a shit game.
