Other good birding sites are Lady’s Island, Tacumshane Lake, The Slobs (Wexford Wildfowl Reserve) and Cahore Point. There is no jetty, so disembarking is a wet landing, with transfer by dinghy onto the rocky and seaweed slippery shoreline. There is nothing on the island but birds and peace. The family still stay on the island intermittently, but Great Saltee is still open for visitors during daylight hours year round, in line with Prince Michael I’s wishes. The Islands consist of the Great and Little Saltee and are situated approximately 5km off the coast of Kilmore Quay in County Wexford.

We are slowly moving along the cliff edge in the direction of the Gannet nesting site, taking photographs on the way. I was talking to my mother about puffins the other day and there you go! Some of the terrain can be difficult to navigate but with sturdy footwear it is workable and well worth it when you get to see these wonderful birds in the natural habitat. The males build the nests, which are burrows in rocky cliffs either in soil or amongst the rocks. We got the 10am ferry and were picked up again at 2pm which is exactly the right amount of time to walk all over the island with plenty of time to bird and seal watch. Most of the island is covered with ferns that can grow up to the height of 4.5 f. Between the ferns, there grow briars and brambles of all sorts. These birds are too young to start a family, so they are hanging out with their neighbours. Due to the harsh decrease in puffins' population, Ireland becomes one of the unique spots for watching them in the wild.
There is absolutely no shelter on the island (apart from the Neale Family’s home, which is obviously not open to the public), so there was no hiding from the torrential downpour.
