reviews for the movie the swimmer

Save this one for a rainy day because you won't find many more like it. Don and Helen are surprised but genuinely pleased to see their guest and before long they are joined by another couple the Forsbergs who he also knows from his past, they too are overjoyed at this unscheduled reunion. Way ahead of its time film about the falseness of the American Dream. "May there always be sugar on your strawberries". A brilliant societal critique that goes from blithe to bleak in 90 minutes, Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2019. As he stops in each pool his interactions tell his life story. Plus, in the age of #MeToo, I was really struck by the scene with the woman he had the affair with. You are what you read. He likes other peoples' pools. When we think of Burt Lancaster, we think of gentlemen, nice guys, honest guys, men we would like to know. An enigmatic, poetic, disturbing, interestingly pretentious fable. There are a lot of tragic heroes hidden in suburbia, I guess, perhaps because so many of them subscribe to the New Yorker. It was after this point in the film that the purpose of “The Swimmer” began to sink in (pardon the pun)(and of which is why I am recommending it). The plot revolves around his interactions with the people/neighbors he comes in contact with in swimming home. Many of those Ned encounters are openly critical, commenting on his failed marriage or the children who have turned their backs on him. But as a fan of Burt Lancaster's work, I can that this film is relevant today as it was when it came out. Deftly directed by Frank Perry, perceptively written by Eleanor Perry (the script is based on a John Cheever short story), gorgeously shot in sparkling color by David L. Quaid, elegantly scored to beautifully lulling melancholic perfection by Marvin Hamlisch, and exceptionally well-acted by a first-rate cast, this wonderfully offbeat and moody allegory about the misery, snobbery, isolation, superficiality and shallow materialism of upper-class American suburbanite existence as well as the inevitability of getting older and the subsequent loss of youth packs a remarkably potent and poignant punch. The cinematography and direction feel very dated at times yet it is fair to say in the context of the time this was a bold movie. Don't have an account? Directors Frank Perry, Sydney Pollack, in addition the writers John Cheever and Eleanor Perry, have presented something unique that deserves revisitation and evaluation long after the first viewing. What can you say about the swimmer that hasn't already been said. Even with that said, Ned is comfortable maintaining a rather overly pleasant demeanor that becoming almost disturbing in itself.

But as a fan of Burt Lancaster's work, I can that this film is relevant today as it was when it came out. We learn something about this man's life at every poolside, until finally we are able to piece together a story of his disgrace and failure. The Swimmer is a perplexingly weird movie. A successful executive - Ned Merrill - (in the end we realize that this is not quite so), in a psychological trance, imagine being in a time before the real and decides to "go home", the metaphor that supports the film. The length of his absence and where he was and what he was doing during the absence remains a mystery in this story. User Ratings

| At last he arrives at his goal, older and wiser and with many a tale to tell.

Lancaster portrays the male's experience on this earth perfectly.

His friend leaves him. Brilliant, Challenging, and Hard to Describe or Forget. The gorgeous weather and beautiful greenery of the fabulous properties that Merrill travels through act as a direct comparison to the very dark nature of the actual story. Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2015, I would have never watched this movie had two things not happened.

This is a day in the life of a damaged man, a man who is clearly not a good person, a middle-aged man who in one very uncomfortable scene appears to make a pass on a teenage girl on the basis that she had a crush on him as a little girl. Rather than walk straight back to his house, he decides to "swim" home, touring the pools of all his friends and neighbors. Some parts may feel slow and dreamy, but at the core “The Swimmer” does indeed have a “purpose” to fans of cult cinema.
