Tom Perrotta has always been one of my favorite authors because he's one of the few current writers who actually gets what middle and upper middle class life is like in the predominantly white suburbs of the Northeast and he's been "getting" it since his early works 20+ years ago. This short story is classic Tom Perrotta, including the combination of honesty and naïveté that one comes to expect from his characters. Told in his voice, you can see what's coming, the point at which male jostling and a re-arranged pecking order will lead to something really bad.
So many ways to parse through that one. Perrotta grew up in New Jersey and lives outside Boston. I guess I was expecting more.
