I have not played any of the Paper Mario games that are a direct inspiration, but for me it felt more like a Mario and Luigi RPG anyway and I’m very familiar with these. Just an absolute beast of a villain and I would never betray him. The rock enemies (can't remember their names - the ones on Pica Pica Island) reminded me of those "Mexican" halloween costumes. lol Sorry for seeming impatient. The many diverse gameplay elements of Underhero mesh well and add benefit to the game rather than retract from it. A real gem. very fun to play, very engaging. Really like the game, it feels so much like a Genesis or SNES era game. What’s noticeable right from that start however is that unlike the inspiration, Underhero is not turn-based.

Overall I’m a huge fan of risk-versus-reward battle systems like these that encourages skillful play, and Underhero also nails this department. As many of you probably know, the Mario and Luigi games are some of my favourite RPGs out there due to their gameplay rewarding actual skill instead of just high numbers.

Most of what you’ll be doing instead is puzzle-solving or going through world-unique gimmick like underwater whirlpools that launch you forward like a speeding hedgehog who doesn’t have to worry about running out of breath.

You can’t perform any defensive abilities while your stamina is rock-bottom, so you can’t just mindlessly attack- and dodge however you please.

Underhero is a 2D side-scroller RPG adventure game with timing-based combat. when I first read it, but it absolutely has the best parts of turn-based combat while also having the tension & urgency of non-turn-based combat. The first one is a bit of sarcasm from me since most aren’t really that hidden but they are still secrets in every sense of the word. I guess I'll just fiddle around in options until it works. I like the level design, I like the puzzles, I like that the game is linear (I found backtracking to be very minimal & justified, filled more with suspense for whatever you're going back for than boredom). Could very well be my controller as I’m a gamer known for destroying them, but I wasn’t really a fan of it as a result.
