One of my favorite little puzzle gems on a system with more gems than one can count! Would pickup again on a heart beat if brought back to the eshop or psn. “We did a two-game deal with Ocean to develop Wetrix, followed by Vampire Circus.". Infogrames really weren't interested in Wetrix. Comfortable calling you friend. With the game freshly burned to cartridge, Ste and John took it along to to Ocean about a week after Wetrix had initially been signed for PC. “Then John added the ability to raise and lower individual cells in the flat plane, in order to create hills and valleys and walls to test the flow and movement of the water." However, it was the second idea that opened the door to Wetrix. “Haha, this was a little bit naughty," Ste tells us. I hope we'll see a revival of classical 3D styled games, with a little more polish than one could of dreamed back in the day (Seriously, N64 graphics have aged, really, really, really, badly ), Makes me think of this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XWCkqlNGuI. Water effects, fireballs, etc could all look so much better these days. @XCWarrior Sure you can get the PC version, just try google something akin to e.g. Need to give this game a shot on my everdrive, Really good game, found it one day on a fleamarket and instantly fell in love with it ^^. I still keep the PC version around. Wetrix was officially born, albeit in demo form and, at this point, just for PC. “John had come up with a few programming techniques that he wanted to experiment with," Ste explains. “Thinking back, as the game was based around hordes of enemies (hence the Gauntlet inspiration), it would have been an early entry into the zombie game genre, that subsequently became very popular," Ste points out.
The N64 was also notoriously difficult to program for. Yes, you got the name right. Also, I've seen you comment in some other corner of Reddit.
I vaguely remember a game where you place land squares and water spheres in tetris-like formations on a land mass in order to make bodies of water to score points. Although N64 didn't have a mass amount of games, it had the higher quality games for the most part. At the time, however, the industry was a very different beast, and not one that was particularly receptive to either small studios or small games. One of the best N64 games ever and it has really stood the test of time very well. Games now are so easy to go indy and get recognition through many outlets. Bring a HD version to Wii U!! Upon announcing themselves to the receptionist, she responded by asking “Oh, you're the guys who wrote this?" Easy to pickup but difficult to master. The company's controversial decision to opt for a cartridge-based system over CD-ROM stacked the odds against it, with many long-time third-party partners dropping or drastically reducing support in favour of this cheaper, higher capacity technology. The first, he tells us, was to come up with a way of having hundreds of independently moving enemies filling the screen, which at the time would have been a very uncommon feature. As a result, the N64 gets a bad rep for not having many games, especially when it comes to its third-party offerings. Wetrix is single-screen puzzle game where you must position pieces as they fall onto a square landscape, thus creating dams needed to collect falling water which flows around the landscape. “[Wetrix] should have done a lot better, as Infogrames France slashed the orders that Ocean US wanted to make for the N64 version — probably to divert money to one of their massive loss-making 'mega' projects — so it's more of a niche game than it should have been, and we made a lot less money from it than we should have," says Ste. Wetrix (N64) Music - Classic Mode - Duration: 9:47.
Definitely my favorite puzzle game from that area. The two-man team returned home, a bit dejected, to discover an unexpected message waiting for them on the answering machine. “As we tend to make original games, we always have the problem that our games don't necessarily match players' initial expectations," Ste clarifies. Definitely a product of its time...a 3D puzzler. Console platform holders were not nearly so indie-friendly back then, so developing on console wasn't possible for a small start-up.". We recently caught up with Ste Pickford who, with his brother John, makes up the legendary duo known as the Pickford Bros, to find out more about how Wetrix came to be. There is no steam, gog or any other version, because it is not decompiled. I've been loving on this game for over a decade. It's one of the rare N64 games that I think would have aged very well (but I'll admit I haven't played it in forever as I never did buy myself a copy. Its too good to be forgotten! Nice to know we run in similar circles. Very interesting to hear the story about it! Even today, the way the water behaves in-game is impressive, and while the gameplay is relatively simple, Ste notes that the game is far from trivial in terms of technical performance. “Although a bit underpowered like most of the 3D machines, it was actually much more advanced than the PlayStation in a lot of ways, with mipmapping and anti-aliasing." The plan would then be to follow up with Vampire Circus, the hope being by that point that Zed Two would be a more established studio in the industry. (or so we all though) This is one of those unique gems that didn't have a 2D counterpart, nor does it need too. “The Rubber Ducky!" I adored this game and I really wish it had found its way to the Virtual Console. I made my mom drive in the pouring rain back to Replays on a Sunday to trade it back in using their 24-hour don't like it guarantee, on the count of it sucked so bad. Darn I wish they'd remake this for a new gen to try! Just like the gameplay concept behind it, the game's origins are both incredibly interesting and unique. It stands as a testament to both Ste and John, who approached the process of creating a game with a mindset that ran counter to the norm of the industry at the time and overcame a great deal of difficult obstacles while doing so. While there was some disappointment on the sales side of things, Wetrix was nevertheless warmly welcomed by both critics and players at the time. It was a huge win for the brothers and their small studio, although certain events that followed the closing of the deal resulted in some pretty big — and in some instances, immovable — obstacles for them to contend with. Can't provide any links here, but I'm sure you'll make a find easy enough! R.I.P. Also, time has been fine for N64 as a retro console. The game was subsequently ported to personal computers running Microsoft Windows 95/98; to the Sega Dreamcast, as the enhanced remake Wetrix+; and to the Nintendo Game Boy Color, as either simply Wetrix or Wetrix GB. This enabled John to work out the theory of a dynamic water system, to write the code and to do so without having to worry about graphics or assets for the water. It was (in my memory) definitely on the N64. Our special thanks go to Ste Pickford for taking the time to answer our questions. Hosted by 44 Bytes. The sub-reddit for all things Nintendo 64. One of the all-time puzzle classics. Forgot all about it! And while the game was nevertheless funded and released on PC, N64, Dreamcast and even Game Boy Color, Infogrames didn't see it as a game that fit their profile of “mega-hits", despite it making a good profit in percentage terms.
