In a normal human individual, consciousness extends to incorporate differentiated and sophisticated levels of representation (Damasio, 1999): from perception to language and mathematical thought. Random perception signals are like rainfall finding its way down to the closest attractor, leading to a thought, a memory recall, an association or a decision to react. There are many different, In a more advanced biology we may need to replace concepts like “information”, “consciousness”, and related concepts with a new much richer ontology, to deal with the enormous variety of types of informed control, mechanisms acquiring, using and producing information, and combinations of control in products of evolution, and also recent and future products of human engineering design, with correspondingly diverse concepts related to what we now call “information”.

So- what possible good reason could there be to simulate a universe?

There has been a vast amount of empirical research and theory construction in biology, along with many practical applications, including including understanding complex pathologies and finding new types of prevention or medical treatment. I submit it would be surprisingly difficult to fully-formalize a plausible theory of consciousness where the biological life of Earth constitutes the majority of the universe’s qualia. We could then formulate an anthropic-aware measure for this applicable from ‘within’ a computational system, and apply it to our observable universe.

Many other arguments could be made, particularly, surrounding the four other topics I identify above, but there are too many unknowns to say very much with confidence. But this research barely scratches the surface of the complexity waiting to be understood, and perhaps put to use, in future.
