It may be the case that this Gospel was written in two parts – 1-13 and 14-16 – by two different authors, or from two different traditions. Especially when you have both sorts of references to the time span between Jesus’ death and resurrection in one book by one author, and indeed sometimes even within close proximity to each other, one should take the hint that these texts were not written according to our modern exacting expectations when it comes to time references. On the face of it, this might seem to involve a flat contradiction. He is the author, editor, or translator of over 50 books on a large variety of topics. Of course, the day Jesus died is not nearly as important as the fact that he, the God-man, did die for our sins on the cross. They agree that the two expressions—“three days and three nights” and “after three days”—are Semitic idioms indicating “the third day.” Thus, the use of all of these expressions in the gospels means the same thing, that Jesus was crucified and died on Friday. All very good research except for three points…1] Because Christ was a Jew and the Sabbath (a high Sabbath – The First Day of Unleavened Bread) was coming upon them ( for them the day starts at sunset), 2] Christ had to be in the tomb BEFORE sunset (Jewish tradition), not allowing time for embalming (seeing as Mary had to wait till after the High Sabbath to prepare for the anointing which was an all day process – not allowed on a Sabbath – also not allowing her time to anoint Christ – for the weekly Sabbath was now upon them – making her wait again until the first day of the week) 3] Therefore Christ rose on a Sabbath (weekly) before sunset, at the end of 3 days & 3 nights – no more and no less – for Christ did not speak in generalities on this subject – but in precise measurement of time – 3 days and 3 nights – 3 / 24 hour periods – He kept His word! Hosea spoke of God’s resurrecting work for Israel as occurring on the third day.

Admittedly, I’m coming at this with an English understanding, but does the Hebrew, Aramaic, and/or Greek make this understanding invalid? Jesus had to rise on the third day because He said He would. Therefore, there is no discrepency in the Gospel accounts: none.
