The more or less Hard sci-fi approach of the story, in regards to orbital mechanics, the way centripetal forces inside Rama would act, how liquids and air inside would react was amazing and probably very unusual in the time this was published. Both were tortuously understood by many genre viewers as optimistic paeans to technological progress, with a bit of hoo-ha at the end; and Clarke himself never directly contradicted Kubrick’s dramatic rendering of his own exceedingly measured presentation of his clear message—also articulated in Childhood’s End, and hinted at strongly in Rendezvous with Rama—that as a species we may simply not quite measure up. The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries.
